In Singapore — Orchidaceae, part of the PEACE series, John Black explores stability and balance through the symbol of the orchid, the national flower of Singapore. Unlike the diptychs in the series, this work is presented as a unified composition, reflecting a state of cohesion and controlled harmony. The orchid, rendered in layered color and outlined with luminous lines, becomes both organic and constructed—suggesting a system where growth is carefully shaped. Transparent acrylic layers subtly alter the perception of the image, allowing light to shift across the surface. The word “peace” appears embedded within the composition, reinforcing the idea of peace not as a passive condition, but as something engineered, maintained, and continuously negotiated.
