In American Dream, John Black reinterprets the visual language of classic American tattoo culture as a meditation on impermanence. Bold, saturated roses emerge against a deep black field, their stylized contours evoking the illusion of permanence — like ink embedded beneath the skin. Beneath the glossy surface, the artist’s signature iconography appears as a faint, laser-etched presence — spectral and receding. The dream becomes a mark: chosen, inscribed, yet inevitably subject to time. Lines blur, meanings shift, and what once signified permanence dissolves into memory. The work unfolds as both homage and elegy — a reflection on aspiration, transformation, and loss.
